Every college football team has strengths and weaknesses. The teams that win a lot of games do not always have the most talent. Rather, they have coaching staffs that understand what the players do and do not do well, and they do a great job strategizing to help their players win individual matchups.
For much of the Brent Pry era the Virginia Tech coordinators struggled in this area. As a result, the team lost a lot of games. Sure, they lost to teams with more talent, but they also lost to teams with equal or less talent.
The lightbulb seems to have come on, though, recently. In this episode, I discuss the key matchups from the Wake Forest game, what the data told us going into the game about the strategies most likely to be successful, and how things played out on the field.
