Few people, outside of (former) offensive linemen, pay attention to the line’s performance, except when things go wrong.
In my student days at Virginia Tech, one of the guys I used to hang out with on a fairly regular basis spent our freshman year as a preferred walk-on offensive guard. In addition to knowing all the players, he knew the finer points of interior line play.
As such, I can remember him calling out great blocks during a televised game that my untrained eye couldn’t even see.
While I don’t know the finer points of the position any better now than I did two decades ago, I was intrigued with the current situation from a managerial perspective.
Why is there, seemingly, great competition for every spot on the field except the offensive line? Where are those hard conversations we hear Coach Pry talk so much about?
I did a deep dive on the numbers behind the disappointing results up front for the Hokies, and I share the results in this podcast.
I think you will find those results informative.
