Week 4 Games that will Impact Virginia Tech's Post-season Destination
Three games to keep an eye on
Last week looked tough in terms of rooting interest games, and it was. Still, even the teams that lost showed out pretty well.
Outside of the top six or seven teams in the country, the middle is very muddled. Most teams within the SP+ top 50 (ahem, ahem, Florida St.) are still playing for a playoff berth.
However, the field of true contenders gets whittled down every week.
Virginia Tech is still in a fine enough position, but the ACC needs its top teams to move up in the rankings if there is to be any chance of the conference getting two teams in the playoff.
Last Week’s Rooting Interest Record: 1-2 (5-4 on the season)
Record of Predictions in Rooting Interest Games: 1-2 (6-3)
Boston College gave Missouri a good game. There is no shame in losing that one. (Rooting L, Prediction W)
For the second straight week, Pitt pulled off a huge come-from-behind victory. (Rooting W, Prediction L)
At this point, we can stick a fork in the Florida St. Seminoles. They’re done. (Rooting L, Prediction L)
Alright, enough of last week. Let’s get on to this week’s games!
Game 1: Georgia Tech at Louisville
Louisville, like Rutgers, hasn’t really played anyone yet this season. The Cardinals are mainly skating by on expectations and last year’s results. The spread here is huge. Don’t be surprised if the Yellow Jackets pull off the road upset. It would certainly help the Hokies if Louisville were to get tagged with an early season conference loss.
Rooting Interest: Georgia Tech
Game 2: Miami at South Florida
Had Virginia Tech not lost at Vanderbilt, this game would have much greater “trap game” potential. Still, the Bulls are better than Miami would want them to be, and better than most people nationwide realize. South Florida has played Alabama into the fourth quarter in each of the past two seasons. It would be really easy to root for the upset here, but it’s best for the Hokies if Miami strides into next Friday’s game all fat and sassy.
Rooting Interest: Miami (by a hundred!)
Game 3: Michigan St. at Boston College
ACC pride is (sorta) on the line tonight in Chestnut Hill. Most eyes will be tuned into the Tennessee at Oklahoma game, but BC, as nearly a touchdown favorite, has a chance to move to 3-1. The better Boston College is, the more attention the Thursday night game in Lane Stadium later in the year will get. And that is most definitely in Virginia Tech’s interest.
