The Evolution of Virginia Tech's In-State Recruiting

In order to contextualize the 2024 Virginia Tech high school recruiting class, it is important to understand recent trends in recruiting within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Every college football program’s success depends first and foremost on its ability to secure commitments from a significant chunk of the best in-state talent.

During the peak Beamer years, Virginia Tech consistently landed many of the top in-state recruits. Over time, though, competition for these players has increased.

The 247 composite numbers are complete dating back to the 2009 recruiting class, so I broke the 16 years of data into the following groups:

  • Late Beamer Era: 2009-2012 (the recruiting classes following 10-win seasons)

  • Twilight Beamer Era: 2013-2015 (Beamer’s final years)

  • Fuente Era: 2016-2021

  • Pry Era: 2022-2024

Each era is distinct, not just for how Virginia Tech fared on the recruiting trail, but how other schools were faring. This analysis looks solely at top 1000 recruits nationally from Virginia and where they committed.
